Description
A northern goshawk is a frequent visitor to my place as it hunts small rodents and especially pigeons. I had spotted this one flying low along a hilly pasture of my place, and was surprised to see it land on my snowy porch. I assumed it would be gone by the time I got my camera, but it stayed long enough for me to take this portrait shot through the window. Snow kicks up as it adjusts its position.
The northern goshawk is a bulky medium-large raptor in the family Accipitridae that also includes other extant diurnal raptors, such as eagles, buzzards and harriers. The adult has a slate-gray cap, white eyebrow and finely barred belly of gray feathers. The goshawk is considered fierce and a "true hawk." They often skim, wings extended, close to the ground while searching for prey.
