Description
Putting up hay is an important part of farming: feed for the cows, goats, or whatever. Before mechanical hay balers were invented in the early 1900s, hay was stacked in large bins, and a beaver slide was the method of doing this. Horses pushed a wide wood rack through the field and to the bed of mechanical device (in the air in this picture). Other horses or mules pulled ropes to swing the bed of hay into the air so the hay wpuld drop into the holding area.
Although demonstration sof this occur at historical sites, I know of several farms and ranches that still use beaver slides.
