Description
These are just a few thousand of the snow geese that annually descend on Freezeout Lake in western Montana each spring and autumn. Many have flown from Argentina; they rest on the lake and adjacent ponds here to gain strength for the rest of their journey to arctic regions. Farmers in the area have set aside a few acres of grain fields on which they can feed.
It's a splendid sight. I captured this image, with the Front Range as backdrop (it's 30 - 40 miles away). The bird count was well over 50,000 snow geese, plus nearly 6,000 Trumpeter swans, and myriad other migrating birds.
