Description
These two structures in Helena Montana USA, are iconic features of the capital city. They sit on a high hill that overlooks Last Chance Gulch--the original 1850s street of the town.
>>The Fire Tower is the oldest and known as the Guardian of the Gulch. Built in 1876, it is 25 feet tall and the official city landmark. It was manned 24-7 for fire alerts until 1931. There used to be hundreds of these towers across the western USA; the Guardian in Helena is one of five left. It is on the National Historical Registry.
>>>Bluestone House, noted for its intricate architecture, was built in 1889-90 as a private residence. Several families lived there through the years. It was severely damaged in the 1935 earthquake and sat derelict until a 1970s Urban Renewal project saw to its restoration. It currently houses offices of Wild Montana, a nonprofit which advocates protecting access to public land and the wild.
