Western Tanagers have taken a liking to my pine trees. They prefer pine, fir, and open forest land. This is a male, with the iconic red-orange head, is grabbing a snack at the suet cage I've tied to the tree trunk. In his breeding colors, he's a standout among the green needles and brown bark. The tree is located about 30 feet from my kitchen window, from where I took this shot.
Western Tanagers are common from north Canada, down to Texas. They winter in Mexico.
Insect eaters, they also like fruit. The male feeds the female while she's nesting, which accounts for the many visits a day that I see them at the suet and on the ground (plenty of ants there).

Digital painting and graphic art techniques developed when working with authors to create covers for their books. I apply these skills to many of my images.
