Description
Stands of broad leaf cattails grow in several areas near where I live. Somewhat surprising, since the land is mostly arid (think sage brush and cactus). But irrigation of the crop fields runs off in ditches and the nearby lake edges are very marshy. The flowers (the brown cattails) go to seed in early autumn, turning white with seed fluff. This image shows plants in several stages of reproduction and the white fluff is, to me, a sure sign autumn is on the way.
Nearly every part of the cattail plant is edible. Check out edible wild plant sites to see how you can add it to your diet.
