Description
A small group of pronghorn antelope graze in a snowy field not far from where I live. Their coat colors are bright against the winter scene. Pronghorns are speedy animals found on the plains from Northern Mexico north into Canada. Top speed is around 60mph, and they can maintain 35mph for up to four miles. While flighty, they are also very curious. A buck decided to hang out at my place and keep his harem there. He was always watchful when I worked with my horses and would often greet me when with a squeaky whuffle when I went out in the morning. He'd make the noise until I looked around to see him. I'd raise my hand and wave, and he was satisfied--went back to grazing. He was once in the horse paddock, watching, about 20 feet from where the farrier was shoeing one of my horses. Unlike other herd animals, they are often family oriented. During 4 years, I observed three of this buck's babies raised on my property, with him staying near the doe and little ones as guard. I learned a lot about this ancient animal. A few species of pronghorn are endangered, but not the ones near me.
