In autumn, the pods of milkweed plants burst and dark seeds with gossamer-like silks emerge. They are carried by the lightest breeze to new locations.
Milkweed plants are a critical for Monarch Butterfly life cycle because the caterpillars feed on these exclusively. Several dozen varieties of milkweed grow in the U.S.
