Description
Here is one of Montana's State Birds strutting in my back yard. Western Meadowlarks are usually seen/photographed while singing from a fencepost of tree snag. They are really a ground bird, prefering natural grasslands, abandoned weedy fields and rangeland. I have several pair that nest in my "weedy fields" and on occasion they come into the yard, especially when I've run the sprinkler in the summer. They are a messy-looking lot when wet! Love the black V on the yellow breast, and their song is one of the first I hear in the springtime. Always makes me smile.
