Description
This is an old building left over from mining days in Elkhorn, Montana. Elkhorn is abotu 30 miles, as the crow flies, from Helena; ~45 miles by road. The mine developed in the 1870s and by 1900 had produced 8,902,000 ounces of silver, 8500 ounces of gold and more than 4 million pounds of lead. No mining there since the early 1900s. Two buildings are in the public domain and maintained by the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest and USDA Forest Service. Several people live in the old town, some building new houses.
