Description
This is a figurative abstarction of one of my favorite animals. I didn't know a lot about crocodiles until 20 years ago when I took on a Work for Hire project: develop a young adult nonfiction book about an animal for use in libraries and schools. From a short list, with limited choices, I picked crocodiles because I knew so little about them. (Any opportunity to increase my knowledge!) The book title is, appropriately, THE CROCODILE. :)
Fascinating, ancient reptiles, belonging to the order crocodilia, various species of this creature can be found on all the warm-weather continents. The Nile crocodile, one of the largest in the world, can be 20 feet in length and weigh more than 1500 pounds, while smaller species don't grow to more than 5 feet long. The big guys are quite deadly to animals, including humans, but many have strong maternal instincts, watching over their nests of eggs and carrying new hatchlings to the water in their large, toothy mouths.
The research was fun, and as I learned about these prehistoric predators, I became impressed and a "fan."
