Description
This pair of Sandhill Cranes was stalking the pasture close to my house, and, no doubt, grabbing up grasshoppers. I took dozens of photos of them from my front porch. Nikon D610, 500mm lens.

Sandhill Cranes are common in prairies and fields. I usually see them closer to irrigation points and marshes, not on my place which has no irrigation and is a good four miles (as the crane flies) from the lake. The cranes stand upwards of three feet and have a wingspan of 80 or so inches. Small rodents, frogs and insects are their food.

Love red on the top their heads!
Kae Cheatham replied:
That red is their crane signature. I thin k there's a crane in India that has a red head, but the feathers are black and white. Thanks for stopping, Marcia.
