Description
The Atlas Building is one of many landmarks in downtown Helena, Montana. Completed in 1889 for an insurance company, from street level, it is hard to make out the interesting gold flame relief and salamanders on the roof line--the mythical creatures believed to be immune to fire. Historically, Last Chance Gulch in Helena, had numerous and often devastating fires.
The full structure is a Richardson Romanesque building, and is in the Helena Historic District, a federally-designated district in Helena, Montana.
Since downtown Helena is in a gulch, I was able to get a straight line view of the intricate art work from a nearby hill in Reeder's Alley.
